“Cartea Moldovei” is facing hard times. It has been two years since the oldest editing house in Moldova has not published a single book. Employees haven’t received their salaries since last year and the company’s debts constitute over two million lei. The administration mention that they got into this crisis two years ago when the Ministry of Culture cut the budget for publications , but also because of the libraries’ incapacity to purchase the books accumulated in the stocks of the editing house.

Those four volumes of Ion Druta’s works are the last published books at “Cartea Moldovei” editing house. It has been two years from then. Because of the cuts in the state budget, the editing house cannot afford to publish new works and hardly meet the ends. Employees blame the state for their indifferent attitude toward culture, as well as blame the ex-management team.

But the solution to the problem came unexpectedly, but not from the state – from edelweiss Foundation, founded by the prime vice president of Parliament, Vlad Plahotiuc. He decided to purchase over 16 thousand books from the warehouse of “Cartea Moldovei” and donate them to the libraries, which didn’t receive a single book in years.

One of the libraries that benefited from this donation was the one from Straseni city. Vlad Plahotniuc, the Founder of Edelweiss Foundation mentioned: “When I open a book, especially an old one, I feel the smell of the village. I had a happy childhood, mostly spent in the company of books. Count de Monte Cristo, Beleav with his Amphibian Man, and many other books that are not being read today. And it is a regrettable thing for me.”

Edelweiss Foundation Founder’s act is not only a gift for hundreds of village children, but also a chance of survival for the future of the oldest editing house in Moldova.

Until now, in the framework of “For the book of Moldova” campaign, libraries from Straseni, Anenii Noi and Stefan Voda received a thousand books each.
