Hundreds of women and children, victims of domestic violence received assistance from the Psychological Counselling and Legal Services Cabinets established by the Foundation of Vlad Plahotniuc “Edelweiss”. At the same time, the Foundation has supported several public awareness raising actions in our country related to the domestic violence phenomenon. This is the summary of the “Protected Families” campaign, by which Edelweiss aimed to contribute to prevention and detection of cases of child and women abuse in the Republic of Moldova.
The “Protected Families” campaign was carried out being supported by the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family, but also with the involvement of local authorities, which have Memoranda of cooperation signed with the Foundation. At the same time, the campaign has benefited from the support of several celebrities and public figures from the Republic of Moldova and Romania, who popularized the campaign’s message and said “No” to domestic violence.
During the campaign, the Foundation of Vlad Plahotniuc “Edelweiss” has supported several actions to combat domestic violence. Thus, some school tours have been held to inform secondary school pupils with regard to domestic violence phenomenon and an online community called #SpuneNuViolenţeiÎnFamilie# was created to support the campaign’s message. Also, various painting competitions and flash mobs on domestic violence topic were organised, respectively, fundraising actions were supported for victims of family abuse.
At the same time, under the campaign held by Edelweiss Psychological Counselling and Legal Services Cabinets were created in the North, Centre and South regions of the country, respectively in Drochia, Hincesti and Cahul districts. These Cabinets had the mission to manage the free phone line launched by Edelweiss – 08001 0881 – where victims of domestic violence had the possibility to ask information and make an appointment for free psychological and legal counselling sessions.
Thus, throughout the campaign 294 people have benefited from psychological services, including 48 minors. Besides psychological counselling, 20 of these people were referred to other public institutions, NGOs, placement services, medical institutions etc. to receive other types of assistance. Also, 158 victims of domestic violence have benefited from legal services. Overall, the telephone line launched by Edelweiss registered around 900 calls from people who reported various cases of abuse.
“The “Protected Families” Campaign has managed to achieve its goal. The domestic violence topic was brought to public attention, and victims of family abuse could receive the necessary assistance from specialized Cabinets”, said Lidia Cucos, the Executive Director of Edelweiss. At the same time, the Foundation’s representatives say that this kind of campaigns will continue to be supported by Edelweiss. “Such campaigns make our society better. Our intention and of the Edelweiss founder Vlad Plahotniuc is to provide further support to campaigns with a profound social impact”, said Lidia Cucos.
We remind that the Foundation of Vlad Plahotniuc “Edelweiss” has launched the “Protected Families” campaign on August 16, 2016. The campaign was justified by the alarming statistics on domestic violence and started with the promotion of the national single phone number 116 111 established by the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family. On this phone number created for children the witnesses or victims could report cases of child abuse.
