Inventive, hard working and enthusiastic the Moldovan young participants returned to the country with the bronze medal from the World Robot Olympiad held in Mexic. They have worked for almost two months to build a robot that can perform tasks in record time and have managed to podium competing with more than 170 other countries.
The Edelweiss Founder Vlad Plahotniuc met the four pupils being curious to find out more about their unique invention they presented at the competition, but also about what they want to do next.
“We want to make a robotic head that will carry a brief communication with an approaching person. It will have the sensors and engines needed for that”, said one of the pupils Mihai Molan.
Pleased with their achievements, but also ambitious for the future Nicolae Mihalache confessed: “The third place, the bronze medal at such an International Olympiad, where 173 countries participated is a pretty good result for a small country like Moldova, but obviously the next year will focus on better results”.
“I believe that our country has capacity through people’s minds, that is through new inventions and by developing new areas such as robotics we can raise the country to a higher level”, said one of the participants Andrian Bocancea.
Vlad Plahotniuc congratulated them for their beautiful results and encouraged them to continue with what they are passionate about.
“I want to congratulate you and tell you that you are a successful model of a team for Moldova, perhaps an example for all pupils and not just for them. I encourage you to continue, and since only encouragement is not enough, I promise to support you along with the Edelweiss team in your ambitions. One of the Foundation’s objectives is to support talented people, children, pupils”, said the Edelweiss Founder Vlad Plahotniuc.
The Edelweiss team offered the young people a 3D printer and a powerful laptop, equipment that will help them continue with outstanding achievements in the field.
Both the Founder Vlad Plahotniuc, and the pupils enjoyed the conversation, had questions and things to tell.
“The meeting seemed quite interesting to me because we were able to talk about the things that we are passionate about and we like. I liked that I was able to talk to Mr. Vlad Plahotniuc”, said Andrei Copaci after the meeting.
The World Robot Olympiad FIRST Global Challenge took place during August 16-18. The Moldovan team consisting of five pupils was on the victory podium together with Romania, which ranked first and Singapore, which ranked second. The theme of this year’s competition was “Energy Impact”, one of the global issues. The young people had at their disposal a standard set of parts, engines and mechanisms, and during three months the participating teams conceptualized, built and programmed a robot that simulated on-site the production of energy from renewable sources.
