This donation is part of the Campaign „Save the Book of Moldova” carried out by Edelweiss Foundation since August 2011. During the campaign, more than 15 thousand new books have reached libraries across the country.
The library of “Mihai Eminescu” lyceum from Făleşti counts around 12 thousand books. However, there are just a few books that pupils can use to prepare their lessons.
“We have no money”, that’s what local authorities say. This year the amount allocated for buying new books, has been enough to buy just 100 new books. To ensure children's access to reading, Edelweiss Foundation has donated over 1,500 books to Făleşti libraries.
The students from Glinjeni village will also receive new books in their school library, where nearly 50 percent of books available, are in Cyrillic script. The local authorities promise to solve this problem and ensure access to literature to children from the region.
According to official statistics, the libraries from the countryside of Moldova have limited funding to enrich their stocks of books. Currently, only about 20 percent of the amount of necessary books can be found in the public libraries across the country.
