The library of Stefanesti village, Stefan Voda region, is one of the institutions to benefit from donations on behalf of Edelweiss Foundation. In the framework of “For the book of Moldova” project; the library of Stefanesti village received a lot of over 1,000 books.

Readers from Stefanesti village, Stefan Voda region, understand the importance of the book, but have no possibility to read them in the local library. They are forced to read Eminescu and Alecsandri in Cyrillic. And exactly the same is the situation of hundreds of pupils from Moldovan villages. After 20 years of the establishment of Latin writing, libraries are filled with soviet literature, an acute lack of Romanian books being felt.

There are over 80% of books in Cyrillic from the total amount of over six thousand books. One can still find the works of Vladimir Ilici on the shelves; the ones that became decoration items with only dust to be swept from.

Lack of books in Latin is felt mostly by the children from primary school. Ana Deleu, manager of Stefanesti village library, mentioned that “books for primary school, counts only one hundred, while children come to the library on a daily basis and reread them; know them by heart”.

Edelweiss Foundation reacted to the appeal of Stefanesti village authorities and offered a lot of over a thousand books to the village library.

Over 15 thousand books will be distributed to the libraries in the framework of “For the book of Moldova” project.
